Catherine's Annual Yuletide Musical Celebration Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her yearly Yuletide celebration at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The 1,600 guests will enjoy a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Love and Generosity

The central message of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any expectation or recognition, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the carol service.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to the public eye subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists supported by the Future Talent organisation, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for instrumental training.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be performing at the concert.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.

That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
