Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 people got wounded in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in Italy's north.
Event Timeline
The blast took place as officers and emergency crews approached the property close to the city of Verona to carry out an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.
All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
A man and a woman were arrested at the location and a third person who escaped subsequent to the incident was apprehended not long after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.
The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.
Property Situation
The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, said the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to debts accrued by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member triggered the blast.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander told reporters.
A gas canister had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the minister confirmed.
Casualties and Damage
Those injured by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
The official was convinced the blast had happened on a story above the entrance and informed the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.
Local Response
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed local news, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
